lock Exclusive control of an individual database record.
For hashed and indexed files, the PeriProducer DiskIO block requires
that an application maintain exclusive control of an individual record
for the purpose of updating or deleting it. During such operations, the
record is locked by the application, which prevents an application on
another line from updating or deleting that record until the first
request has completed. If an application on another line attempts to
modify or delete a locked record, the latter is suspended (that is,
paused) until the lock is released.
A lock must be previously established on a record (using the Read
and Lock option) for an application to either update it or delete it
(using the Update or Delete options). This means that for the
application to implement a single Delete or Update request, two
DiskIO blocks are required. The first DiskIO block locks the record
using Read and Lock and the second DiskIO block specifies the
Delete or Update request.
When an application places a lock on a record, the lock should be
released as soon as possible to avoid obstructing modifications to that
record by other lines.
