Chapter 2

Adding Network Interfaces

This chapter describes how to use the Conﬁguration Manager to add network

interfaces based on router defaults.

Defaults are suitable for most networks; however, the Conﬁguration Manager lets

you change (or customize) these settings after you add the interface. Bay

Networks offers protocol-speciﬁc manuals that provide instructions for

conﬁguring network interfaces; refer to these manuals as necessary.

This chapter assumes that you are familiar with the Conﬁguration Manager’s three

operating modes and that the Conﬁguration Manager tool is running on your

workstation. Refer to Chapter 1 for information on the three operating modes and

for instructions on starting the Conﬁguration Manager tool.

Overview

Depending on the type of network interface you want to add, the Conﬁguration

Manager requires you to specify a limited number of WAN and bridging/routing

protocol parameters. It then provides default settings for the remaining parameters

required to conﬁgure the interface.

To add a network interface, you must do the following:

1. Conﬁgure the circuit.

2. Enable bridging/routing protocols on the circuit.

Note: If you are conﬁguring an Access Node (AN) or an Access Stack Node

(ASN) for the ﬁrst time, you must read Connecting BayStack AN and ANH

Systems to a Network or Connecting ASN Routers and BNX Platforms to a

Network before you continue. Those manuals explain the special

considerations for conﬁguring and booting ANs and ASNs.
